Lip Seals

Concept and Functioning

Lip seals are available in both radial and axial versions. They are fitted into a fixed seating in a housing. Sealing is carried out by means of a sealing lip which presses onto the surface of the rotating shaft. Because of the continuous rubbing action in operation there are very high requirements for the shaft surface.

Applications

Lip seals are particularly used for the provision of economic solutions in areas where space is restricted. These have a wide variety of applications including motors, gear boxes, pumps, cement mills, compressors etc. A major application area is in bearing units where the leakage of lubricant must be prevented.

Lubrication and Friction

Adequate lubrication of the seal is essential for the longevity and reliability of the seal. The more intensive the lubrication, the less the wear.
Under no circumstances should the seal run dry. The medium being sealed is not only a lubricant but also functions as a cooling fluid to carry away the heat caused by friction.

Features

• Cylindrical outer jacket to give a secure location for static sealing in the housing.
• Sealing lip tensioned by a spring to ensure the dynamic and static sealing on the shaft.
